As One Door Closes, Another Lights Up

As autumn turns to winter and the days grow shorter, we’re preparing to wrap up the wonderful season at Swinton Bivouac. At the end of October, the Bivouac hub will close its doors until spring. It’s been a fantastic year—welcoming visitors to explore the Yorkshire Dales on our all-terrain Trampers, soak up the views, and experience the freedom that comes with being outdoors.

But don’t worry — we’re not putting the Tramper into hibernation just yet. In fact, we’re thrilled to share some exciting news.

🌟 This winter, the Tramper is moving to the Swinton Estate for the Luminescence Light Trail! 🌟

What Is the Luminescence Light Trail?

Each winter, the magnificent Swinton Estate near Masham in North Yorkshire transforms into a glowing wonderland of colour, sound, and festive spirit.

The Luminescence Light Trail is a magical after-dark experience that winds through the estate’s historic parkland. Visitors follow an illuminated route lined with creative light installations, atmospheric music, and seasonal surprises. Picture twinkling trees, reflections shimmering on the lake, glowing sculptures, and that unmistakable sense of winter wonder.

It’s the perfect blend of art, nature, and Christmas sparkle — and now it’s even more inclusive, thanks to Access the Dales and the Tramper.

The Tramper’s Winter Home

Our Tramper mobility scooter is relocating to the Swinton Estate for the duration of the Luminescence event. Designed for off-road use, the Tramper allows anyone with limited mobility to navigate the trail with comfort and independence.

With sturdy wheels, a high-powered battery, and a comfortable seat, it’s perfect for exploring the estate’s paths, slopes, and woodland trails — even in winter conditions.

We’ve worked with the Swinton team to ensure that there’s plenty of time allocated for each booking. You’ll have ample opportunity to move at your own pace, stop for photos, and enjoy every twinkling light and festive tune.

This collaboration means that no one has to miss out on one of Yorkshire’s most enchanting seasonal events.

How to Book Your Visit

To make the most of your evening at Luminescence, there are two steps to book:

1️⃣ Book Your Luminescence Tickets

Tickets for the light trail must be purchased directly from the Swinton Estate. These give you access to the illuminated route and the wider event facilities. Choose your preferred date and time slot via their official booking page.

2️⃣ Book the Tramper

Once you’ve secured your Luminescence tickets, head to the Access the Dales website to book the Tramper for your visit.

A few helpful reminders:

  • The Tramper must be booked in advance via Access the Dales.

  • You’ll still need a valid Luminescence ticket to access the trail.

  • Availability is limited, so we recommend booking early—especially for weekends and school holidays.

    Accessibility at Swinton Estate

The Luminescence Light Trail has been thoughtfully designed to be as inclusive as possible. Paths are wide and mostly level, suitable for mobility scooters, wheelchairs, and pushchairs. The addition of the Tramper ensures that even visitors who might find uneven ground difficult can experience the full magic of the event.

The trail typically takes 1 1/2 to 2 hours, depending on your pace, and includes resting points, refreshment stalls, and seating areas. Warm drinks, mulled wine, and festive treats are available at the start and finish — perfect for a cosy winter night out.

Dogs are welcome but must be kept on lead and parking is close to the start of the trail for easy access.

    Why This Partnership Matters

At Access the Dales, our mission is to break down barriers and open up the great outdoors to everyone. Partnering with the Swinton Estate for Luminescence is a perfect example of what inclusive tourism can look like — where accessibility meets imagination.

We’re incredibly grateful to the team at Swinton for recognising the importance of inclusion and for helping us ensure that the Luminescence Light Trail is truly for everyone.

So, whether you’re a Yorkshire local or visiting from further afield, this winter event is an unmissable opportunity to experience nature, art, and accessibility coming together in perfect harmony.

    Looking Ahead

While our Swinton Bivouac hub rests until spring, we’re delighted that the Tramper will continue to bring joy throughout winter. From exploring heather-topped hills to rolling beneath canopies of light, it’s all part of the same goal — ensuring that everyone, regardless of mobility, can share in the beauty of the outdoors.

Thank you to everyone who has supported Access the Dales this year — our volunteers, visitors, and friends. Your enthusiasm keeps us moving forward, season after season.

We can’t wait to welcome you to the Luminescence Light Trail — where winter nights glow a little brighter and accessibility shines. ✨
